A Practical, Evidence-Informed Approach to Naturopathy

Aug 28, 2026

If you are new to naturopathy, you may be wondering what actually happens during a consultation, how natural medicine fits alongside conventional healthcare, and whether it might be relevant to your health goals.

Welcome to my first blog post.

I’m Dr Steven Brown (Acupuncturist), Naturopath and Registered Nurse, and through this blog I’ll be sharing practical health education on nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, stress, wellbeing and natural medicine.

My aim is to make health information easier to understand and, importantly, useful in everyday life.

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy takes a broad view of health.

Rather than looking at one symptom in isolation, a naturopathic consultation may consider factors such as:

  • nutrition and dietary patterns

  • sleep

  • stress and emotional wellbeing

  • physical activity

  • digestive health

  • medications and supplements

  • medical history

  • pathology results

  • lifestyle and environmental factors

  • your individual health goals.

Every person arrives with a different story, which is why I believe healthcare recommendations should be individualised rather than based on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Natural medicine and conventional healthcare can work together

One of the principles that is particularly important to me is collaborative healthcare.

My background includes both conventional and complementary healthcare, and I don't view these approaches as being in competition with one another.

Naturopathic care should not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment.

Your GP, medical specialists and other healthcare professionals remain an important part of your healthcare team.

When someone is taking prescription medication, for example, this needs to be considered when discussing supplements or herbal medicines. Prescription medications also remain under the management of the healthcare professional who prescribed them.

There are also times when the most appropriate recommendation from a naturopath is simply:

“This needs further medical investigation.”

Good healthcare includes knowing when to refer.

What does an online naturopathy consultation involve?

An initial consultation gives us time to explore your health in detail.

Before your appointment, you may be asked to complete a health questionnaire and provide information about your current medications, supplements and relevant medical history.

During your consultation, we can discuss:

What has brought you to the appointment

What are your main concerns? How long have they been occurring? What would you most like to improve?

Your medical and health history

Previous diagnoses, investigations, procedures and other relevant healthcare information can help provide context.

Medications and supplements

Understanding exactly what you are currently taking is an important part of providing appropriate recommendations.

Nutrition

Rather than focusing on perfection, I am interested in understanding what you actually eat and what changes are realistic for your lifestyle.

Sleep, stress and lifestyle

Sleep quality, work demands, physical activity, stress and daily routines can all form part of the bigger health picture.

Your goals

Your priorities matter. A health plan needs to be practical enough to fit into your life.

What might a naturopathic plan include?

Recommendations will depend on the individual.

A management plan may include:

  • nutrition strategies

  • lifestyle recommendations

  • sleep and stress-management strategies

  • nutritional supplementation where appropriate

  • herbal medicine where appropriate

  • review of relevant existing pathology

  • consideration of further testing where clinically appropriate

  • referral to another healthcare professional when needed.

Importantly, more treatment is not automatically better treatment.

You shouldn't need to leave every appointment with a cupboard full of supplements.

Sometimes the most useful starting point may be changing meals, improving sleep habits, increasing movement or addressing another fundamental part of your routine.

Why I use an evidence-informed approach

There is an enormous amount of health information online.

Some of it is useful.

Some of it is confusing.

And some of it makes promises that simply aren't realistic.

My approach is to combine available evidence, clinical knowledge, professional experience and the individual circumstances of the person sitting in front of me.

I also believe it is important to be transparent about the limitations of natural medicine.

No practitioner can guarantee a particular health outcome, and responsible healthcare should never rely on exaggerated promises.

Health doesn't have to be all or nothing

One of the themes you'll see regularly on this blog is practicality.

You don't necessarily need:

  • the perfect diet

  • twenty supplements

  • an extreme exercise program

  • an elaborate morning routine

  • or a complete overhaul of your life.

Small, sustainable changes performed consistently can often be far more realistic than trying to change everything overnight.

My role is not to expect perfection.

It is to help you understand your options, establish priorities and develop strategies that are appropriate for your individual circumstances.

What I'll be writing about

Over the coming months, I'll be publishing articles covering areas such as:

  • nutrition

  • digestive health

  • sleep

  • stress and burnout

  • fatigue and energy

  • healthy ageing

  • weight and metabolic health

  • supplements and herbal medicine

  • understanding pathology

  • practical lifestyle strategies

  • navigating health information online.

I'll also be developing online courses and eBooks for people who prefer to learn independently and work through health education at their own pace.

A final thought

Healthcare can become complicated very quickly.

My goal is to make it a little less complicated.

Whether you're reading an article, completing one of my future courses or working with me through an online naturopathy consultation, I want the information you receive to be clear, practical, individualised and grounded in responsible healthcare.

Thank you for visiting.
